Those of us that love sport, live it and breathe it. We feel it. It reaches deep down into our body and soul, and elicits every emotion imaginable: from despair to elation, from vulnerability to anger. Whether we’re playing sport, coaching it, watching it, listening to it, or reading about it, our emotions drive our every response and relentlessly keep us coming back for more.

This is a podcast that explores twelve key emotions with some stellar sporting names, and uncovers just how those feelings affected their careers, both as a motivation, and as a limitation. It is a journey into the emotional psyche of some Britain’s most talented, most successful, most articulate sportsmen and women.

Running on Emotion – Episode Three, Joe Root

Joe is England’s current Test cricket captain and is just a couple of victories away from being the most successful skipper the country has ever had. So talented, driven and clear-thinking was he as a youngster that he played senior club cricket at the age of just 12. Happily he has managed to retain his deep, infectious love for the game as he continues to lead his country. With more than 8000 Test runs at an average of 48, and 18 Test centuries, he is firmly established amongst the elite batsmen of the game, and has held the Number 1 world ranking. Clarity of purpose shines through Joe’s career, and clarity of thought is a constant theme as he does battle with the world’s top bowlers, in some of the most hostile, intimidating arenas. His ability to keep his head in the maelstrom of top flight cricket has helped the English game flourish, with the Cricket World Cup win in 2019 just one of many successes.
