Those of us that love sport, live it and breathe it. We feel it. It reaches deep down into our body and soul, and elicits every emotion imaginable: from despair to elation, from vulnerability to anger. Whether we’re playing sport, coaching it, watching it, listening to it, or reading about it, our emotions drive our every response and relentlessly keep us coming back for more.

This is a podcast that explores twelve key emotions with some stellar sporting names, and uncovers just how those feelings affected their careers, both as a motivation, and as a limitation. It is a journey into the emotional psyche of some Britain’s most talented, most successful, most articulate sportsmen and women.

Running on Emotion – Episode Six, Sir Andrew Strauss

Andrew is amongst the most successful and lauded England cricket captains of all time, and one of only three men to lead his country to Ashes Test series wins both home, and away. From a starting position of some disarray, his ability to engender trust and confidence in his England team led them all the way to the world number one ranking. The trust in his technique and ability saw him play 100 Test matches, and amass more than 7000 Test runs with a batting average of more than 40, including 21 centuries. His spell as captain coincided with the managerial stint of Andy Flower, and together they forged a crucial bond of trust in each other, and transformed a disparate band of cricketers into a team of world beaters. In the latter part of his career, his trust in the players was put to the ultimate test by Kevin Pietersen.
