Those of us that love sport, live it and breathe it. We feel it. It reaches deep down into our body and soul, and elicits every emotion imaginable: from despair to elation, from vulnerability to anger. Whether we’re playing sport, coaching it, watching it, listening to it, or reading about it, our emotions drive our every response and relentlessly keep us coming back for more.

This is a podcast that explores twelve key emotions with some stellar sporting names, and uncovers just how those feelings affected their careers, both as a motivation, and as a limitation. It is a journey into the emotional psyche of some Britain’s most talented, most successful, most articulate sportsmen and women.

Running on Emotion – Episode Nine, Martin Offiah

Martin was arguably the greatest rugby league player of his generation, and amongst those of any generation. A showman, he collected 20 Cup winning medals across a glittering career that featured an eye-watering 501 tries, many of them mesmerising in their brilliance, and courageous in their conception. He was dazzlingly fast, beautifully balanced, strong in contact and possessed a rare gift for finding the try line. Displaying the courage to be different in his approach, and to overcome horrific racial abuse, Martin was an integral part of the all-conquering Wigan team of the ’80s and ’90s, and scored 26 tries in his 33 appearances for Great Britain on the international stage. He finished with an MBE and a statue outside Wembley.
